There is no independent variable. The research question is whether the frequencies or proportions of the categories of the dependent variable match a previous or theoretical distribution.
The independent variable is also a categorical or nominal variable. Examples include control versus treatment or sex or political party affiliation.
The independent variable consists of scores or quantitative values. Examples include temperature, admission test score, and cigarettes smoked per day.
