SunOS 5.7: Problem saving projects, etc.

When I (and my students) are trying to save their projects in PDP++, the
gzip process gets stuck and never finishes.

What could be the reason for this? We're running the "end-user version
of PDP++" on Sun workstations, SunOS 5.7 (Solaris 7).

Would be grateful for any help or ideas...
