Fileserver Accounts
Any CU Psychology faculty, staff, graduate student, or postdoc may request a fileserver account. This account is a password-protected amount of disk space on our fileserver. The fileserver is accessible from essentially any internet-connected machine and is backed up nightly, providing a great deal of safety to any data or documents stored there.
In addition, faculty may request a lab account, which provides an easy way to share files among lab members (as well as providing a backup for data).
A fileserver account has another advantage. CLIPR maintains a lab of Macintosh eMacs in Muenzinger E321/E329 (with overflow space in E317). Logging in to one of these computers using your fileserver account login and password gives you your own personal, customizable, Mac OSX desktop interface, incuding access to a variety of software and of course your personal files. This can be particularly advantageous for someone who doesn't have a computer in their office.
How do I connect?
Note: To connect to the file server from off-campus, you will need to install VPN software. “VPN” stands for “Virtual Private Network.̵ After you install this software, every time you run it you will appear as if you are getting onto the internet from campus, which will give you access not only to the CLIPR fileserver, but also other useful websites like libraries.colorado.edu, pubmed, etc., for literature searches. Go to CU’s Information and Technology Service’s website to download VPN software.
Macs
To connect to the fileserver from a mac running OSX, choose “Connect to Server” from the “Go” menu (Command-K is the keyboard equivalent) in the Finder. In the dialog box that appears, type in the name of the server you want to connect to. For the clipr fileserver, this would be “psych‑srv2.colorado.edu”. Type in your username and password and then select the volume you wish to mount (which in this case will be your own).
Windows
To connect to the fileserver from a windows computer on campus, right-click on “My Computer” and choose “Map Network Drive...” In the dialog box that appears, in the “Folder:” area, enter the following (without the quotes): “\\psych‑srv2.colorado.edu\username”. (Note: substitute your login name on the fileserver for “username” here.) Enter your fileserver username and password in the dialog box that appears. When you're done accessing your account, make sure you choose “Disconnect Network Drive...”, which can be found immediately below the Map Network Drive choice.
FTP
Regardless of your computer platform, it is also possible to connect to the fileserver from any ftp program. Without going into much detail because of the numerous ftp programs out there and the vagaries of each, suffice it to say that the server name to connect to is “psych‑srv2.colorado.edu”.
