IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MATERIAL ON EXAM 1

  • As announced in class, I would still like you know about some of the ways we gain information about the self. In particular, you should know about the role of cultural (via socialization), introspection, self-perception, and social comparison as sources of self-knowledge. All of these were on the outline for 9/6. Some were covered in class on either 9/6 or 9/13, and all are covered in the book. There was 1 source of information about the self --reflected appraisals -- that was on the outline from 9/6 but that we did not ever discuss in class. YOU WILL NOT NEED TO KNOW THIS FOR THE TEST
  • I was originally going to discuss impression formation strategies on 9/11 and they were listed on the study guide. However, we did not get a chance to cover that material. Thus, you can ignore the following topics that are on the study guide:
    • following social norms
    • using self-promotion
    • using modesty
    • basking in reflected glory
  • Please do still familiarize yourself with self-handicapping
  • Other than these changes, the study guide reflects all the information you will need to know for the exam.

Tuesday, 9/11

  • Class was let out early today because of the events of the day. We did hand out the study guide for the first exam, which is on Tuesday, 9/18. Copies are available for you to download on the class outlines page.
  • On Thursday, we will do a combined lecture that finishes up the material from chapter 5 and chapter 6.

Two Office Hour Changes:

  • Because of the Labor Day holiday, Professor Ito will hold office hours this week on Friday, 9/7, at 9:00-11:00.
  • On Monday, 9/10, office hours will be moved back by 1 hour, and will be at 11:00 - 1:00.
