Jessica Andrews-Hanna

Research Interests: : I am interested in using fMRI to investigate the neural underpinnings of introspective thought (i.e. autobiographical memory, future thinking, self-referential/affective processing, social cognitive inference) and the mechanisms by which such processes are regulated by top-down control. By characterizing these mechanisms in healthy young adults, I hope to examine how they change across the lifespan as well as in clinical populations.

Claudia von Bastian

Research Interests: My research focuses on the mechanisms of experience-based cognitive plasticity, and the factors potentially boosting or hindering cognitive change and learning. More specifically, I am interested in the effects of short-term interventions (e.g., intensive training) and life-long experiences (e.g., bilingualism) on working memory and other higher-order cognitive performance. In ongoing research, we examine the cognitive underpinnings of STEM learning and its relationship with executive functions and mind-wandering. I am also involved in the development of Tatool, a Java-based open-source framework for programming experiments and trainings (www.tatool.ch).

Carolyn Buck-Gengler

Research Interests: My research interests fall in the area of psycholinguistics and computational linguistics. I am especially interested in experimental psycholinguistics, reading, lexical access, and language acquisition.

Hélène Devillez

Research Interests: My research focuses on how people perceive and explore complex, natural stimuli — real-world scenes — and which processes influence the way we explore a scene. My ongoing research uses EEG and/or eye movements to investigate visual object recognition processes and the influence of expertise on it. I use both eye movements and measures of brain electrical activity — ERPs (Event Related Potentials) from the EEG or EFRPs (Eye-Fixation Related Potentials) from the joint recording of EEG and eye movements — to quantify top-down and bottom-up influence on visual exploration.

Research Interests: My research is guided by my interest in the nature and origins of higher-order cognition and focuses specifically on the role of linguistic experience in the development of cognitive control. I have conducted experimental studies with preschool-aged children exploring various ways that linguistic input may contribute to young childrenís ability to exercise cognitive flexibility. In my postdoctoral research, I am examining the role of private speech in the developmental transition from reactive to proactive control.

Research Interests: My research uses both behavioral and neuroscience techniques to examine how faces are processed and subsequently remembered. I am interested in how grouping cues, such as race or team membership, interact during face processing and how these cues impact memory.

Detre Godinez

Research Interests: My research utilizes behavioral genetic and neuroimaging designs toward understanding the biological systems underlying the development of executive function and regulatory abilities. In particular, I am interested in the effect of stress, both acute and chronic, on executive function and emotional regulation.

Seth Herd

Research Interests: What is human nature? How can a thinking, feeling, deciding and conscious mind emerge from dumb matter? How can we improve our lives? These sound like philosophical questions, and yet science is now able to address them. I teach and write to clarify what's important in current cognitive science. These issues are informed by my research with artificial neural networks and theories on vision, executive function, and how the brain learns in and over time.

Clare Holtpatrick

Research Interests: My research focuses on the development of categorization and factors such as type of information, language, and task. More specifically, I am interested in the roles of perceptual and conceptual information, category structure, and object labels in learning and categorization.

Tsung-Ren "Tren" Huang

Research Interests: My main research interests are human and machine learning of perceptual/cognitive skills. I use computational modeling and psychophysics to address research issues such as neural mechanisms of visual scene understanding, attentional effects in perceptual learning, and cognitive flexibility in rule learning.

Shaw Ketels

Research Interests: Iím interested in implicit learning in laboratory situations, but more importantly pedagogical implications of past, current, and future laboratory findings from all areas of cognitive psychology. Things donít always scale up.

Research Interests: Research interests: Interactions with other individuals as well as social relationships in general have profound effects on human cognition and behavior, yet the brain mechanisms underlying these influences remain little understood. I use fMRI, EEG, as well as peripheral-physiological and behavioral measures to study how social context factors interact with cognitive and affective processes. In ongoing research, we investigate how pain is experienced and regulated in social interactions.

James A. Kole

Research Interests: My research focuses on training and transfer of low- and high-level cognitive skills, mechanisms underlying and the generality of inhibitory processes, and memory augmentation. Currently, I am conducting studies examining inhibition in a simple motor task, long-term retention and mediation, and a two-factor theory of the retrieval-induced forgetting effect.

Kai Arne Kruger

Research Interests: My main research interests lie in modelling of prefrontal cortex and executive control. In particular, I'm interested in the amazing flexibility of human control and its ability to rapidly adapt to novel tasks, either through efficient trial and error learning or through the help of instruction. I am interested in identifying some of the computational principals and requirements that allows the brain to achieve this flexibility and see if these can be modeled in neural networks or if they can be applied to artificial learning agents.

Research Interests: My research is interdisciplinary, involving statistical, computational, distributional, and experimental methodologies and involving data from corpora, laboratory tasks, typological surveys, and speech errors. I am currently the Assistant to the Director for the Center for Research on Training at CU, funded by a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) grant to investigate training of knowledge and skill.

Research Interests: Inducing error in cognitive tasks can help us understand brain processes. I study errors in visual perception and figure ground processing and build computational models that consider context. I hope to create biologically realistic models that make the same errors as humans in perception tasks to bolster our confidence that out computational models are realistic.

Vicki Schneider

Research Interests: My current research is in skill acquisition, retention and transfer. More specifically, we are conducting research based on communication between air traffic controllers and pilots. My previous work has included the study of reading, memory, and second language acquisition.

Sergio Verduzco-Flores

Research Interests: Dynamics of biologically-plausible neural networks, embodied cognition, neural oscillations, working memory, and anything that promises to explain the workings of the brain at some level.
